Jonathan Gray - Archive of Archaeological Observations

The unofficial archive of updates from the mailing list of our explorer friend, Jonathan Gray.

If you've poked around this site enough, you probably have noticed more than a few references to this gentleman. His research is unlike anything else I've read. Topics range from ancient technology to Biblical Creationism to earth changes and applicable astronomy (the zodiac belongs more to this field than the bogus practice of astrology). He has a fantastic ability to weave all these fields together and show the bigger picture while logically and thoroughly casting light on the deceivers and imitators of God and man.

I highly recommend checking out his website and picking up a book or ten. Trust me, they will entertain and dazzle as much as they will educate and strengthen.

"We've made an awful mistake!"

Dismay was in Dean's voice. "A student has knocked
our theory to bits!"

Dr Dean Kenyon, Professor of Biology (Emeritus) at
San Francisco State University, was one of the
leading chemical evolution theorists in the world.

He co-authored "Biochemical Predestination", which

1. that the evolution of life was inevitable…

2. that proteins to produce living cells were formed
directly by forces of attraction between their parts…

3. that proteins are just formed together (self-assemble)
in chains, directly from amino acids, without any DNA
assembly instructions.

His theory was accepted with enthusiasm by the
evolutionary scientific community. But within just five
years after publishing, Kenyon suddenly had serious

It began when one of his students asked, “How could the
first proteins have been assembled without the help of
genetic instructions?” (Proteins were the necessary
information to build the first cell.)

And then DNA was discovered. This would prove fatal to
Kenyon’s molecular evolution theory. Kenyon confesses,

“The more I conducted my own studies, including a period
of time at NASA-AIMS Research Center, the more it became
apparent there were multiple difficulties with the
chemical evolution account.

“And further experimental work showed that amino acids
do not have the ability to order themselves into any
biologically meaningful sequences.

“The more I thought about the alternative that was
being presented in the criticism, and the enormous
problem that all of us who had worked on this field
had neglected to address, the problem of the origin
of genetic information itself, then I really had to
re-assess my whole position regarding origins.”
(Unlocking the Mysteries of Life)

What he now had to address was this: What was the
source of the biological information in DNA?

“If one could get at the origin of the messages,
the encoded messages within the living machinery,
then you would really be onto something far more
intellectually satisfying than this chemical
evolution theory.” (Ibid.)

The astonishing fact is that inside every
microscopic-sized cell, machines work together to
accomplish specific jobs and are shepherded by
other specially shaped machines to precise locations
where they are needed.

Learning this, Kenyon exclaimed, “This is absolutely
mind-boggling, to perceive at this scale of size,
such a finely tuned apparatus, a device, that
bears the marks of intelligent design and

This is observable evidence of thoughtful, programmed
designing by some Superior Mind. Evidence of
intelligently organized patterns.

Something else. Did you know this? It was recently
discovered that DNA is linked to music!

If you like music, but think that you can’t carry a
tune, you may be wrong.

Respected geneticist, Susumo Ono, believes he’s
discovered music in genes – particularly human genes,
fish genes and rabbit genes. Susumo is a researcher
in DNA.

He asked himself, If we were to assign a musical note
to each chemical on the DNA strand and string those
notes together and play them, what would DNA sound

So he did this – and the result was amazing.

He discovered musical patterns of notes, that again
reveal intelligence.

Susumo Ono was so astonished that he took his
findings to musicians.

And musicians, in turn, were astonished to hear
echoes of Bach, of Schubert, of Mozart in DNA

Using the same formula for converting DNA into
music, Dr Ono worked backwards and translated
Chopin's funeral march into chemical symbols. It
came out cancer!

Skeptics naturally point out that these strands
of DNA produce only a string of single notes; it
is the musicians who fill in the rhythm and the

But the bottom line is this: Whichever way you
look at it, the PATTERNS of single notes testify
to intelligence as the source of DNA.

Certainly it is not from a blind, accidental force
in nature.

But there’s more, much more.

Scientists at Bell Laboratories conducted studies
on the mathematical language in the DNA molecule.

And what did they find? Its mathematical pattern
is identical to that of conversational language.

Concerning DNA, Charles Thaxton states:

“A structural identity has been discovered between
the genetic message on DNA and the written messages
of a human language.” (Charles Thaxton, “A New
Design Argument,” Cosmic Pursuit 1, no. 2, Spring

Hupert Yockey explains:

“There is an identity of structure between DNA
(and protein) and written linguistic messages.

“Since we know by experience that intelligence
produces written messages, and no other cause is
known, the implication, according to the abductive
method, is that intelligent cause produced DNA and

“The significance of this result lies in the security
of it, for it is much stronger than if the structures
were merely similar.

”We are not dealing with anything like a superficial
resemblance between DNA and a written text.

”We are not saying DNA is like a message. Rather, DNA
is a message. True design thus returns to biology.”
(Hubert P. Yockey, “Journal of Theoretic Biology”)

Since there is no doubt in anyone’s mind it takes
intelligence to write a language, it is evident that
it took intelligence to write the DNA code.

Dean Kenyon was asked if DNA comes in intelligently
designed ‘sentences’.

INTERVIEWER: “And is it true that when scientists
peer into the microscopic world of DNA, they find
not mere random arrangements, but well-written
‘instruction books’?”

KENYON: “Yes. Masterpieces of immense intricacy and

INTERVIEWER: “And you argue that these biological
‘sentences’ in DNA could not have arisen merely by
material means, as evolutionists suggest?”

KENYON: “No. Just as the chemistry and physics of ink
and paper do not determine the order of symbols in a
printed text, but that order must be impressed on the
ink from the ‘outside’, so also the order of the
bases, or sub-units, in DNA [adenine, thymine, guanine,
and cytosine, or A, T, G, and C as commonly represented]
is not determined by the known chemical tendencies of
these individual sub-units, but instead appears to have
been impressed from the ‘outside’ on the sub-units to
create just those sequences that make biological sense.

The fantastic complexity and orderliness of the DNA code
– condensed into an incredibly tiny size – suggests the
work of a brilliant intellect rather than chance

It suggests that much thought has gone into their design
– just as human beings use intelligence to design and
construct computers, Jumbo jets, space craft and other
intricate equipment.

If radio signals were to be received from outer space,
they would be understood as evidence of an intelligent

Why then should we not regard the message sequence on
the DNA molecule as prima facie evidence of an intelligent

But that is not all! Gene code letters have built in
error protection!

Genes store information in long strings of DNA, in the
form of chemical letters, called A, T, C and G.

So that genes can be accurately copied, each gene
consists of two parallel strands of DNA held together
by links between the code letters of one strand and
those of the other strand.

The two strands are not identical. That is, A’s do not
link to A’s, and so on.

Instead, they are complimentary. A’s always link to T’s;
C’s always link to G’s.

Donail MacDonaill of Trinity College, Dublin, studied
that pattern of linkages between letters.

And he found that they form a parity code similar to
computer codes, to minimise mistakes during the
electronic transfer of information. (Nature science
update, September 18, 2002)

Now is the moment of truth. No one would be so naïve as
to believe modern electronic parity codes could have
evolved by chance. They were carefully planned by
software designers.

The parity code found in DNA is further evidence the
genetic code was deliberately created.

It also reminds us that DNA is designed to maintain
accurate copies and avoid changes in the information
it carries.

This means it was designed to NOT evolve. But rather
to reproduce its own kind forever.

Come to think of it, wouldn't that make evolution
scientifically impossible?

If you would like more information on this and a
treasure box of amazing facts, here’s all you need
to do:

Just go to
which is set to start blowing your mind wide open.

"Did you hear the news? They've found the bones of
Jesus Christ!"

"Yes, it's on the new Discovery TV documentary."

"Tell me more."

"Well, the documentary is produced by James Cameron,
director of Titanic, and filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici.
It is based on a new book, The Jesus Family Tomb,
co-written by Jacobovici and Charles Pellegrino.

"You know, this is going to be a blast. It promises
the inside story of 'what may very well be the greatest
archaeological find of all time'. It claims that Jesus'
burial cave and body were discovered near Jerusalem.

"It also claims that Jesus Christ sired a son with Mary

"The Discovery Channel is hyping it to the heavens...
the archeology of Jesus Christ.

Get out of the way Dan Brown---The Da Vinci Code hype
will be nothing compared to this!"

* So where are the bones of Jesus Christ?
* What really happened to Jesus after his death?

This is how the story goes. In March 1980, after
bulldozers had uncovered a tomb in the Jerusalem suburb
of Talpiot, Yosef Gat, an archaeologist employed by the
Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), went in to survey
the burial chamber.

It was a standard-looking first century Jewish tomb.
Mr Gat found the main chamber had been silted up with
soil and debris, with six "kokhim", coffin shaped spaces
leading off the main chamber where human remains were

It was Jewish practice to leave bodies for a year or so
to decompose in the "kokhim". Later, relatives would come
back to gather the bones and store them in ossuaries.

In the tomb were 10 ossuaries bearing inscriptions - one
in ancient Greek and the others in Hebrew and Aramaic.

The six persons named in the ossuary inscriptions (Rahmani
701-706) are:
(1) Mariamenou-Mara ( the first name is a unique form of
the name Mariam, Mary, and will be discussed separately
(2) Yehuda bar Yeshua (Judah son of Jesus)
(3) Matia (Matthew)
(4) Yeshua bar Yehosef (Jesus son of Joseph)
(5) Yose (a common abbreviated form of Yehosef)
(6) Maria (a form of Mariam, Mary)

All the inscriptions are in Aramaic OR Hebrew, except the
first, which is Greek.

The 10 bone boxes were removed from the tomb and taken to
the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem. Nine
were catalogued and stored but the tenth was left outside
in a courtyard. That ossuary later went "missing".

Nothing more was said, until two accounts of the discovery
were published by Israeli academics in the mid 1990s. The
second of these was by Professor Kloner in the IAA's
in-house magazine Atiquot in 1996.

This generated some publicity, particularly in a BBC
programme produced by Ray Bruce and shown that Easter,
called The Body In Question.

Cameron's claim is based on six inscriptions having
names similar to or the same as some of Jesus Christ's
family and disciples.

That these names would belong to any other family than
that of Jesus Christ is statistically improbable,
Cameron claims.

Mariamene e Mara could be translated, "Mary known as
the master," which Cameron thinks might be Mary of

Although the chamber has been closed for years due to a
building having been constructed on top of it, the authors
claim that they broke through an apartment floor, into the

They claim to have found human material on which they
performed DNA testing in a New York laboratory.

The pre-publication publicity for the book said, "Tests
prove the names are genetically of the same family and
statistically, there is a one in 10 million chance this
is a family other than the Holy Family."

It is further claimed that DNA analysis identifies that
tissues from the ossuaries of Jesua and Mariamene e Mara
were not related, raising the possibility they may have
been married and had a child.

Thus, said Cameron, the boxes could have contained the
bones of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

So now the sensational claim is that Jesus Christ's
bodily resurrection and ascension was a hoax.

This new book and documentary echoes the Da Vinci Code
novel by asserting that Jesus was married to Mary
Magdalene, and that the couple had a son.

They claim the son was named Judah and that all three
were buried together.

Yes, it is a fascinating story.

In essence it is saying: "This tomb is evidence that
Jesus Christ DID exist, but that he did not rise from
the dead."

One of the strongest pieces of "evidence" that this is
the family tomb of Jesus, is the James ossuary (bone

Two days ago, my friend Joe emailed me:

"It appears, with a very high degree of certainty, that
this ossuary of James the brother of Jesus was stolen
from a collection of ten ossuaries and three skulls
found in this tomb in Talpiot, Jerusalem.

"The Suffolk County Crime Laboratory in New York
analyzed the patina of the James ossuary and found
that it matched the patina (minerals and sediments)
built up on the surface of the other ossuaries found
in the Talpiot tomb."

Joe continues, "One point which is extremely important
is that DNA was found in the ossuary of Jesus. That
means that at least at one point the ossuary did contain

"As you must be aware of bodies were prepared by wrapping
them up with cloth and spices and then placing them in a
tomb until the flesh disintegrated (which probably took
1 year) before placing the bones in an ossuary.

"This would most certainly show that the resurrection,
as recorded in the gospels, did not happen after three

Joe raised these interesting issues -
(a) the alleged connection of the James ossuary with this
alleged "Tomb of Jesus"
(b) the statistical analysis
(c) that the facts have been hidden from the public
(d) that the film has been put together by a fairly famous
movie producer.

If this truly is the family tomb of Jesus, then you can
forget about Christianity.

Why? Because, according to the Bible, Jesus, the Son of
God, rose physically from the dead and later ascended
to heaven.

So there can't be any remains of Jesus. There would be
no bones left behind.

If Cameron's film is true, then

* So much for Jesus' resurrection.
* So much for the Bible.
* So much for the divinity of Jesus Christ.
* So much for Christianity.

It is all fraud - if one is to believe the "non-fiction"
of this Discovery Channel documentary.

Where are the bones of Jesus Christ?

Let me say it again: if Jesus Christ's bones have
really been discovered, then all of Christian history
has been based upon a false claim that:

* Jesus physically rose from the dead,
* was seen alive by over 500 followers at once,
* spent 40 days teaching his disciples,
* and then ascended into heaven.

Very well, you ask, can we really KNOW the truth?

Discoveries captured and ready

Hello Explorer Friend,

Archaeology discovery DVDs - where are they?

Folk are still asking me. And 10 months ago I broke the
news that eight of them had been packaged as a set - no
longer in Video format but as DVDs.

But many unfortunately missed out. So I'm putting the
set together again - in case you would like to benefit from

Here (below) is the previous letter with the information
About this exclusive set:

Hi. This is Jonathan Gray.

DVDs please. Can you get us some discovery DVDs?

That's what folk keep asking me. Yes, I've been listening.
And also trying to figure out some way to place these within
everyone's reach AND avoid charging you for International

At last, after talking to some folk here, I've managed to get
you a good deal on an 8-pack. I don't know how long the
special price will last. And no shipping charges.

But anyway, here they are, all of them in NTSC format -
8 amazing DVD presentations (put together, very modestly -
nothing fancy) - but the facts they give are astonishing.

Some of these are quite CONTROVERSIAL - but the
focus is on EVIDENCE. So here they are:

1. Secrets of the Lost Races
2. Has Noah's Ark Been Found? (In two parts.
Part 2 is Into the Forbidden Valley)
3. The Lost Cities of Sodom and Gomorrah
4. In Search of Pharaoh's Lost Army (Part 2 is:
Smuggled Out of the Desert)
5. Ark of the Covenant
6. Strange Signs in the Sky
7. Secrets of Ancient South America
8. In a Coffin in Egypt

If you'd like to see more detailed information about each
DVD I have put up a special simple webpage (which also
has EASY ordering facilities). Just go to:

I don't know about you, but at school I found history -
the way it was taught - rather boring.

Mind you, I did like history - at least when at home,
reading it for myself, enjoying the stories of peoples'
lives. Who doesn't love a good story?

But in that dreary classroom, things seemed different.

As our teacher rolled off dates to be memorized, acts
of parliament, and other dull things (or so it seemed
then), I gazed out of the window.

There, in brilliant sunshine, were lucky people walking
up and down in the street - free from all this.

Wistfully, I thought, "Oh to be an adult - and have no
more responsibility!"

Well, we do grow up and. surprise!

Never mind. Here's one surprise you should enjoy. Test
your knowledge.

What about Christopher Columbus' ships?

Do you know, Columbus' whole expedition could mount
only 88 men. These were separated onto three ships.
Two of these ships were only 50 feet in length, about
the size of a small fishing boat.

Okay, that's easy to picture.

Now, let's get into a time machine, so to speak, and
travel back further. further. further.

Back to ancient Greece.

When we think of ancient battleships, we think of the
tiny ships shown in a movie like Ben Hur. They had 50
or so men, and a single tier of oars.

That may reflect our evolutionary thinking that the
ancients, compared to us, were primitive.

While we may flatter ourselves with our imagined
knowledge of ancient history, the actual facts coming to
light tell quite a different story.

You ask, Do we have any descriptions of these ships, so
as to know how large they really were?

Yes, we do. Fortunately we do have a good description of
one of the early 3rd century ships.

In 280 BC a naval battle took place in the Aegean Sea.
The largest ship was named the Leontifera.

It had 8 tiers of oars, with 100 oars per tier. Just
calculate that.

That's right, on each side were 800 rowers - a total of
1,600 men.

But that's not all. On the upper deck or hatches were
also 1,200 fighting men who were under two special

Although we are not given the dimensions of the ship, the
oarsmen on each tier would have to be at least 3 feet
apart (that being the approximate distance between
airline seats).

For 100 rowers per tier, allowing for a bow and a stern,
this ship could easily have been 400 to 500 feet (120 to
150 meters) long.

We should realise also that those ancient battles were
not just single morning events. The ships could have been
at sea for a few days before and after the battle.

This ship had a crew of over 3,000 men. Can you imagine
the provisions it would have to carry!

Another fleet, built around 294 BC, is briefly described
by Plutarch.

He says, "Up until this time, no man had seen a ship of
15 or 16 banks of oars. but they had a speed and
effectiveness which was more remarkable than their great
size." (Plutarch, Lives - Demetrius, Book 1, chapter 43
in the original work. 9:107-109, Loeb Classical Library
No. 101, Harvard University Press, 1996)

Athenaeus describes a large warship built by Ptolemy
Philopator (c. 244-205 BC).

It was 420 feet long, 57 feet wide and 72 feet high to
the top of her gunwale. Its 4 steering oars were 45 feet

It had 40 tiers of oars. When we say 40 tiers we mean 40
levels of rowers!

The oars on the uppermost tier were 57 feet long. The
oars were counterbalanced with lead to make them easier
to handle.

It had 12 under-girders 900 feet long.

Now, are you ready for this? Are you sitting down?

The crew consisted of 400 sailors, 4,000 rowers and 2,850
men in arms - a total of 7,250 men. (Athenaeus, The
Deipnosophists, Book 5, section 203f-204b. 2:421-425,
Loeb Classical Library No. 208, Harvard University Press,

How on earth could you get enough room for so many

It has been suggested that to array the massive number of
banks (tiers) the vessel may have been twin-hulled. This
would enable the 40 banks to comprise 20 each side.

Some diagrams of smaller vessels show oar openings
sometimes arrayed diagonally. This offset allowed for a
greater number of banks for a given hull height.

Whatever the solutions, it would be a mistake to under-
estimate the ingenuity of the ancients.

Just try to visualise it.

This ship had a crew that was almost twice as large as
that of the largest aircraft carrier we have ever built.

And it would have had to carry provisions for all on board.

Another ship described by Athenaeus had a catapult
designed by Archimedes that could hurl a 120 pound (55
kilogram) stone over 600 feet. (Ibid., Book 5, Section
204c-209e. 2:425-447)

Now, a word about ancient records. Although we can never
be 100% certain of the accuracy of many ancient
documents, one may trust the document in the absence of
reasons to believe it is a fabrication.

This is the standard procedure in historical research,
whenever a document purports to be giving sober history.

There is consistency to the pattern of ship descriptions
as given by ancient historians, such as Pliny and others,
and no suggestion of exaggeration.

In the light of this, the dimensions of Noah's Ark as
given in the book of Genesis (300 cubits - 525 feet
long) begins to look more like an authentic historical

Egyptian open-sea ships were up to 350 feet long and
60 feet wide, with as many as four decks.

The Pharaohs of the Ramesside dynasty, 1200 BC, were
able to mount expeditions of 10,000 miners across the
Indian Ocean to South Africa and Sumatra.

Ancient China built ships from 250 to 600 feet long -
far larger than anything built by later European

Two Roman ships were found in the 1920s at the bottom
of Lake Nemi, and between 1927 and 1932 were restored,
only to be destroyed by German bombers toward the end
of World War II.

These luxury cruisers contained accommodation for 120
passengers in 30 cabins of 4 berths each, plus crew's

They were richly decorated with mosaic-tiled floors;
walls of cypress panelling; metal columns, marble
statues; and paintings in the lounge.

There was a library; a ceiling sundial; a salon where
a small orchestra entertained the passengers; a large
restaurant and kitchen; copper heaters which provided
hot water for the baths; and modern plumbing, with
bronze pipes and taps.

The underwater part of the hull was sheathed with lead,
fastened with copper nails.

Large luxury vessels of Greece and Rome contained temples
and swimming pools; also dining halls of marble and

Oh boy! We could go on.

Yes, they travelled all over the world - even as far
as Antarctica.
