Event Data Recorders: Helpful Or Hurtful?

"You probably don’t know this, but there is a device in your car that can record certain data right before a serious crash. The main purpose of this equipment is to decide if your air bag should be deployed, but the information it records can also be used against you. In fact, it could send you to jail.

Just ask Michelle Zimmerman. The Beverly woman was driving her SUV on January 4, 2003. She hit an ice patch and skidded into a tree, killing her passenger.

Weiner says state police first determined she was going the speed limit of 40 when the crash happened in Ipswich. But that all changed when they got a search warrant for her vehicle. Then she was charged with motor vehicle homicide and speeding. The state police found an event data recorder. It is part of the air bag system and the information it monitors determines if the air bag should be deployed or not. But in a major crash, the EDR records information about what’s happening in the five seconds prior to the collision."

I have been told over the years that they have more then just this little recorder, recording little details about your driving history. And with the rfid technology, I am sure every car sends out a beacon like we can all be monitored like LO-JACK. Besides using our cell phones to track us, the cars send out its own signal.
